Overview of Housing Exclusion in the EU: International standards of evictions

The Abbé Pierre Foundation and FEANTSA published their Seventh Overview of Housing Exclusion in Europe on 30th June 2022.

This seventh edition explores the effects of the pandemic on housing insecurity for people on low income. It warns of the rise in arrears and the increasing cost of living in Europe, as well as the consequences of the end of the protective measures put in place during the pandemic. In the medium term, this risks an increase in the number of evictions and the number of homeless people.

Although, for the first time in the history of the European Union, all 27 Member States pledged to end homelessness at the launch of the European Platform on Combatting Homelessness in Lisbon in 2021 and the French Presidency of the EU Council outlined a work programme for this new platform, there is still a long way to go. The implementation of the right to housing enshrined in the European Social Charter’s Principle 19 inevitably involves the effective prevention of evictions.
